Mohau Modisakeng

Peter Modisakeng alias Mohau was born in 1986 in Soweto, South Africa. He graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town in 2009. Much of his works are concerned with the issue of violence and the role it played - and continues to play - in colonial as well as postcolonial African society. His subtly wrought sculptural pieces grapple with notions of conflict, aggression and the potential for simmering resentments to escalate to physical violence. In 2010 he received the Spier Residency Award at the Gyeonggi Creation Center in South Korea. In the following year, he participated in the Laab residency and Focus 11exhibitions in Basel, Switzerland, and in 2011 took part in the FNB Johannesburg art fair.

« Okapi » is an oversized replica of a flick-knife popular with tradesmen and gangsters. The enlarged scale of the blade conceptually expands the lethal potential of the weapon to cut and damage, while the smooth curves of the carved wooden handle draw the viewer in on a more sensual level.
