Doughba CARANDA-MARTIN

Doughba H. Caranda-Martin was born in Liberia in 1974. He fled his native country in 1991 to escape the civil war.
He studied art and photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Caranda-Martin - who lives and works in Liberia and New York - is an artist and activist who focuses on African affairs and global culture. He is interested in art, human rights, changes in African politics, women’s rights and child slavery.
He has participated in several solo exhibitions including Water Baby at the Atmosphere Gallery in Woodville, New Zealand in 1996, and also took part in the Stuart Fine Art show in New York in 2009. He won the Emerging Artist Award from the Victor E. Ward Foundation in 2000 and a second award at the Du Pont Lecture Series from the Art institute of Boston. He has participated in several group exhibitions including Photography Art at the White light studio Gallery in New York in 1992 and Realist Men at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Florida in 2002.
