Museu do homem do Nordeste (Men of North-East Museum) : installation, variable dimension, 2013, courtesy of the artist and Galeria Vermelho.

To achieve its Museu do homem do Nordeste, Jonathas de Andrade makes a real anthropological and social study. Andrade has appropriated the work of Gilberto Freire, founder of the Museu do Homem do Nordeste Recife (1979). The works presented here are part of a group of installations and even a real museum created by the artist, who questions the historical, social and political amnesia of the northeast region of Brazil.
The portraits are done through wanted ads published in a local newspaper; the artist attracts workers willing to be photographed in order to represent the stereotype of the man in the north-east region of Brazil. The photographs are accompanied by notes of the artist taken at the first telephone contact following the ads publications. These notes reveal the motivations of each and also learn about how men perceive themselves - sometimes leading to incongruous situations. Andrade’s museum is not without recalling the colonial classifications except that this man as he is photographed today is a proud man. It also reflects the Brazilian melting pot, certainly the greatest wealth of this country.

Jonathas de Andrade, born in Maceió in1982, lives in Recife. Through installations, videos and researches with photography, Andrade investigates social, political, cultural and ideological matters that are at risk of vanishing from collective memory: what humanity chooses to retain or allows do sink into oblivion. His work has been shown at the 12th Lyon Bienale, 2013; the second New Museum Triennial, titled The Ungovernables, in New York, 2012, the 12th Istanbul Biennial, 2011, the 29th São Paulo Biennale, 2010, and the 7th Mercosul Biennial, in Porto Alegre, 2009. His participation in the Future Generation Art Prize 2012 show by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation earned him a special jury prize.
