Born in 1979, Lerato Shadi currently lives and works in Johannesburg. She completed a BFA from the University of Johannesburg. In 2008 she was a featured artist in Art South Africa magazine, and in 2009 she was included in the ‘Younger Than Jesus’ artists-directory published by the New Museum, New York. In 2010 Shadi was awarded a Pro Helvetia residency in Switzerland (Berne at PROGR). In the same year she had her solo exhibition ‘Mosako Wa Seipone’ at Goethe Institut in Johannesburg and in 2011 her fourth solo exhibition ‘50 g and Tlhogo’ at Stevenson, Cape Town.

« Tlhogo » : the woollen sleeve was created specifically to leave just enough space to enter it, made of crocheting hand-spun wool. Performance starts with struggling into the woollen cover and then the entrance is closed by crocheting it from the inside. Though at first glance the viewer is unable to tell that the ‘object‘ on the plinth is alive, only on close inspection does one notice movement from breathing. The performance ends with the performer liberating herself out of the woollen cover. The remains (or the performance relic) are what’s left behind.
