Georges Adéagbo (b. 1942, Cotonou, then Dahomey) is a Beninese conceptual artist. Since the early 1970s, he has developed installations from objects found during his walks in Cotonou, combined with acquired materials and commissioned sculptures, masks, paintings and handwritten or painted texts. By bringing together personal histories, popular culture, and canonical narratives, his work questions how knowledge and history are constructed and circulated. After studying law in Abidjan and business administration in Rouen, he returned to Benin in 1971. He received an honourable mention from the jury at the 1999 Venice Biennale and has since exhibited in numerous international institutions. He lives and works between Cotonou and Hamburg.
