4. Partager les savoirs

5. Relier les continents

PAN-AF DWELLING UNITS
Curated by Youssouf Fofana, the Dakar Biennale’s Design Section is conceived as a manifesto exhibition. It does not present a collection of objects but a hypothesis: that of Pan-African dwelling units. Each piece becomes a reflection on a way of inhabiting today: sleeping, cooking, working, learning, transmitting, welcoming, producing, repairing, celebrating.
The object is not presented as an autonomous piece. It regains its place within an ecosystem made up of architecture, landscape, sound, light, materials, gestures and uses. Design is approached as a relational discipline that organises the conditions of everyday life rather than as the simple production of forms.
This approach shows that responses to current challenges can emerge as much from vernacular practices as from the most experimental research. Drawing on the example of the salons of the Union des Artistes Modernes, the exhibition is conceived as an immersive experience. In the spirit of the Zaria Art Society, it asserts a modernity built from within the continent itself.
General concept and curatorial statement For the 16th edition of the Dakar Biennale, the Steering Committee selected the curatorial proposal of Morad Montazami, Director of Zamân Books & Curating, to serve as Artistic Director of the edition.
The overarching concept is (Anti)Fragility: Arts of Repair and Counter-Shock Strategies.
In this perspective, (anti)fragility refers to the capacity to turn fragile situations into a space for invention and expressive power. The project particularly values social and community bonds, cocreation, gestures of care and responses that make it possible to transform the experience of shocks into new possibilities.
The International Exhibition unfolds through five “guiding threads” around which the artists, projects
and the Biennale’s programme are articulated:
1. Re-Greening the Former Courthouse
Decolonial ecology, agrarian resistance,
Knowledge of medicinal plants
2. The Arts of Maroonage
Fugitive practices, refuges and acts of crossing over
3. Being and Creating Between Care and Repair
Arts therapies at the heart of the city
4. Sharing Knowledge
The library without walls
5. Connecting Continents
