Ibrahim Miranda est un spécialiste de peinture et d’arts graphiques né en 1969 à Pinar del Río, à Cuba. Il a étudié à l’Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas puis à l’Instituto Superior de Arte à La Havane. Les oeuvres de Miranda sont riches en symboles et références issus de l’histoire de l’art et de la littérature qu’il mêle à sa poétique propre que ne bâtit pas forcément une narrative claire et obvie pour le spectateur. Depuis les années 1990, il travaille autour de la thématique de la cartographie. Les séries des Mapaglificos sont des oeuvres en technique mixte, recto-verso, horizontales et souvent très colorées construites à partir des pages de l’atlas géographique cubain, dont les éléments comme les légendes, les statistiques et les cartes dévoilent toute leur potentialité esthétique. Dans son travail, l’île de Cuba acquiert des qualités métamorphiques et organiques, incorporant à son identité celle des habitants de cette île des Caraïbes vivier d’abondantes flores et faunes, d’histoire, de pratiques religieuses et bien plus. La série Cautiverio, résolument actuelle, dénonce la permanence des problèmes de migrations de masse et de traitement réservé aux réfugiés des siècles après la traite des esclaves. Ibrahim Miranda est un artiste versatile et sait combiner un grand nombre de techniques et de médiums, du collage à la gravure sur bois, en passant par le dessin, la peinture et l’encre. Artiste prolifique, il a exposé dans sa Cuba natale, en Amérique du Sud, aux États-Unis, en Europe et en Asie.
Ibrahim Miranda is a painter and printmaker born in 1969, in Pinar del Río, Cuba. He studied successively at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas and Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Miranda’s work is dense with symbols and references – both from art history and from literature, and infused with his own poetic lyricism and aesthetics that do not necessarily construct a linear and obvious narrative immediately obvious to the viewer. He started working on the thematic of cartography since the 1990s. The current Mapaglificosseries consist of double-sided and vividly coloured horizontal mixed media works using sheets of the Cuban atlas combined, legends and statistics included, as its starting point. Under his hands, the island of Cuba acquires a metamorphic and organic quality, constantly reflecting on its own identity and that of those who occupy this Caribbean land, as we can observe from the motifs taken from Cuban flora and fauna, history, religious practices, and much more. Miranda’s concern is not only historic but also current, the contrasting Cautiverioseries is a perfect example. Mass migrations of refugees remain a problem long after the triangular trade has ceased to exist. Ibrahim Miranda is a versatile artist and adapts a wide range of medium and techniques in his work, including collage, woodblock printing, drawing, and painting and he never shies away from using generous washes of ink that we can trace back all the way to his earliest works. He is a prolific artist and has exhibited extensively in his native Cuba, South America, the United States, Europe, and Asia.
