Bev Butkow (b. Johannesburg, 1967) is an artist grounded in the seriousness of her responsibility as a maker, communicator and social actor. Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, she is pursuing an MFA at Wits University. Her artistic and scholarly practices are nuanced by the diversity of her life experiences, including artistic and corporate careers, community involvement, academia and role as a mother and wife. Deeply committed to social engagement, she co-founded a library in rural Limpopo and works on the board of eleven schools. Butkow’s creative home is the Bag Factory Artist Studios. Butkow lives with her husband and four children in Johannesburg, South Africa. In October 2021, Butkow held her MFA show at the Origins Centre Museum, Wits. Curated exhibitions include The Art of Lithography: A Collaborative Expression of LL Editions at Wits Art Museum, and Tactile Visions-Woven at Turbine Art Fair. Recent shows include Divided Selves at P72 Project Space, 1-54 London, Cape Town & Joburg Art Fairs. Bev Butkow is represented by Guns & Rain with work in local and international collections.
