CAMILLE, George – SC – Expo IN

George Camille est né sur l’île de Mahé, aux Seychelles, en 1963. Il a étudié l’art au Seychelles College jusqu’au niveau A, et a ensuite obtenu des bourses d’études au Blackheath College of Art et au Goldsmiths College. En plus de sa formation classique, un certain nombre d’amitiés importantes avec d’autres artistes ont contribué à orienter sa direction initiale en tant qu’artiste. Camille reconnaît et apprécie énormément ses collaborations passées avec « Tonga Bill » Fehoko, l’artiste martiniquais Habdaphaï et l’artiste français Mikel Chaussepied, qui, en 1992, l’a initié aux techniques de la gravure. En 1987, il crée le Sunstroke Studio pour donner un débouché à ses activités artistiques et de design. En 1997, il restaure une vieille maison coloniale en bois, Kaz Zanana, qu’il ouvre comme sa première galerie d’art aux Seychelles. Au cours des trente-trois dernières années, les gravures sont devenues le support de son travail plus détaillé et figuratif. Il est également peintre et sculpteur à plein temps. Il a été sélectionné pour représenter les Seychelles aux 56e et 58e Biennale Arte de Venezia en Italie. Il est également le grand gagnant de la Biennale des Seychelles en 2017 et plus tard l’année suivante, il a reçu le Seychelles Arts Award du meilleur artiste visuel du Seychelles National Arts Council. Camille a réalisé de nombreuses expositions individuelles et collectives aux Seychelles, à Maurice, en Martinique, à la Réunion, au Royaume-Uni, en France, en Chine, en Allemagne, en Russie, en Belgique, en Côte d’Ivoire, au Mali et en Italie. Il est marié et père de trois enfants. Il vit et travaille actuellement aux Seychelles.

George Camille was born on the island of Mahe, Seychelles in 1963. He studied Art at Seychelles College to A level, and was subsequently awarded scholarships to Blackheath College of Art and Goldsmiths College. In addition to his formal training, a number of important collaborative friendships with fellow artists also helped to focus his initial direction as an artist. Camille recognises and values immensely past collaborations with ‘Tonga Bill’ Fehoko, the Martinique artist Habdaphaï and the French artist Mikel Chaussepied, who, in 1992, introduced him to the techniques of etching. In 1987, he established Sunstroke Studio to provide an outlet for his art and design activities. In 1997, he restored an old wooden colonial house, Kaz Zanana, which he opened as his first art gallery in Seychelles. Over the last thirty three years, etchings have become the medium for his more detailed and figurative work. He is also a full time painter and sculptor. He was selected to represent Seychelles at both the 56^th and 58^th Biennale Arte de Venezia in Italy. He is also the grand prize winner of the Seychelles Biennale in 2017 and later the next year received the Seychelles Arts Award for best Visual Artist from the Seychelles National Arts Council. Camille has completed numerous solo and group exhibitions in Seychelles, Mauritius, Martinique, Reunion, UK, France, China, Germany, Russia, Belgium, Ivory Coast, Mali, and Italy. He is married with three children and currently lives and works in Seychelles.
