Né dans le Hong Kong britannique en 1950, Pok Chi Lau est parti au Canada en 1969 dans l’espoir d’étudier dans une école d’art, mais il a fini par travailler dans un restaurant. C’était son premier contact avec la communauté de la diaspora chinoise. En 1971, il s’installe en Californie pour commencer ses études au Brooks Institute of Photography. Il a poursuivi son parcours au California Institute of Arts avant de s’installer dans le Missouri pour sa carrière universitaire. Depuis 1967, Pok Chi Lau est un photographe documentaire. Son travail sur la migration se concentre sur la diaspora chinoise dans les Amériques, au Cuba, en Malaisie et en Birmanie. Pendant une décennie, il a également documenté la Diaspora à l’intérieur de la Chine, où les paysans et les migrants de toute la Chine se déplaçaient pour trouver de l’emploi dans les usines des régions côtières surnommées zones Made in China. Pok Chi Lau est professeur émérite de photo-média au département de design de l’université du Kansas, qui lui a offert de nombreuses possibilités de recherche internationale et grâce à laquelle son travail a été exposé et publié à grande échelle. Born in British Hong Kong in 1950, Pok Chi Lau moved to Canada in 1969 with the hope of studying at an art school, but ended up working in a restaurant. This was his first contact with the Chinese diaspora community. In 1971, he moved to California to begin his studies at the Brooks Institute of Photography. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Arts before moving to Missouri for his academic career. Since 1967, Pok Chi Lau has been a documentary photographer. His work on migration focuses on the Chinese diaspora in the Americas, Cuba, Malaysia and Burma. For a decade, he also documented the Diaspora within China, where peasants and migrants from all over China moved to find employment in the factories of the coastal regions nicknamed Made in China zones. Pok Chi Lau is Professor Emeritus of Photo Media in the Department of Design at the University of Kansas, which has provided him with many international research opportunities and through which his work has been widely exhibited and published. Her work is in the collections of many institutions, including the Museum for Photography in San Diego, California, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. In addition to his work as a photographer, Lau is also a poet and essayist.
