Liu est né en 1974 à Kunming, dans la province du Yunnan. Il est professeur à l’Académie centrale des beaux-arts. Il travaille et vit à Pékin.Depuis 2011, Liu Shangying a travaillé sur de multiples projets de field painting à Ali, au Tibet, à Ejina Banner, en Mongolie intérieure et à Lop Nur, au Xinjiang. Il a commencé à placer les séries de field painting dans de véritables champs naturels lors de ses expositions personnelles après 2017, dans le but d’explorer la relation entre la peinture et la nature. Liu ne peint pas de paysages. Au contraire, il peint à l’intérieur de ceux-ci. Il se fond dans la nature vierge comme un zen, et construit un champ de peinture multidimensionnel en utilisant son corps et son comportement de manière à entrer dans la « seconde nature » créée par l’acte de peindre.

He blends himself in the pristine nature like a zen, and constructs a multi-dimensional painting field using body and behavior so as to enter the « second nature » created by the act of painting.
