Adel Abdessemed, artiste franco-algérien né à Constantine en 1971, a étudié aux Beaux-Arts de Batna jusqu’en 1990 avant de partir étudier à Alger. Suite à des révoltes étudiantes en Algérie en 1994, il s’installe en France, puis à New York en 2000, où il présente sa première exposition en 2001 après une formation à l’International Studio Program.
Ses œuvres percutantes, qui couvrent divers médiums tels que la photographie, la vidéo, le dessin et la sculpture, explorent les limites politiques, culturelles et sociales des sociétés orientales et occidentales. Il réagit souvent à des expériences personnelles et aborde des questions d’identité culturelle, politique et spirituelle, parfois en provoquant des controverses.
Abdessemed est un artiste engagé et discret, exposant dans le monde entier. En 2012, , une exposition intitulée « Je suis innocent » lui a été consacrée au Centre Pompidou à Paris. Ses créations politiques contemporaines ont séduit le monde de l’art, le plaçant sur la scène internationale des foires et biennales d’art contemporain.
Adel Abdessemed, a French-Algerian artist born in Constantine in 1971, studied at the Beaux-Arts in Batna until 1990 before moving to Algiers.
