Jake Michael Singer, né en 1991 à Johannesburg, est un artiste transdisciplinaire qui combine la sculpture, la photographie et la peinture, et dont la pratique est principalement axée sur la matérialité, le mythe et la catharsis.
Singer est titulaire d’un diplôme de la Michaelis School of Fine Art de l’Université du Cap (2013) et a étudié à la Central Saint Martins de Londres. Il reçoit la bourse de la Fondation Eduordo Vila en 2016 et 2017.
Singer a participé à des expositions collectives notables dans des institutions et des espaces publics tels que la Fondation Norval, Iziko South African National Gallery, la Fondation Nirox, Zeitz MOCAA, la Biennale de Kampala organisée par Simon Njami, l’église St-Antoine, Redbull Hangar 7 et Dubai International Financial Centre. En 2020, pendant la pandémie de COVID-19, Singer fonde l’Emergence Art Prize avec la Rand Merchant Bank pour soutenir les artistes émergents en Afrique du Sud.
Plus récemment, l’artiste a concentré son attention sur des installations spécifiques à grande échelle dans des édifices historiquement significatifs d’Istanbul Yedikule Hisarı, durant la 17e Biennale d’Istanbul en 2022, et Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hamamı (2021).
Jake Michael Singer, born in 1991 in Johannesburg, is a transdisciplinary artist who combines sculpture, photography and painting, and whose practice is primarily focused on materiality, myth and catharsis.
Singer graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town (2013) and studied at Central Saint Martins, London. He received the Eduordo Vila Foundation scholarship in 2016 and 2017.
Singer has participated in notable group exhibitions at institutions and public spaces such as the Norval Foundation, Iziko South African National Gallery, Nirox Foundation, Zeitz MOCAA, Kampala Biennale curated by Simon Njami, St-Antoine Church, Redbull Hangar 7 and Dubai International Financial Centre. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Singer founded the Emergence Art Prize with the Rand Merchant Bank to support emerging artists in South Africa.
More recently, the artist has focused his attention on specific large-scale installations in historically significant buildings in Istanbul Yedikule Hisarı, during the 17th Istanbul Biennale in 2022, and Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hamamı (2021).
