Mohamed Diop est un jeune artiste visuel Sénégalais, né en Côte d’Ivoire en 1996 et résidant à Dakar. Il passe son enfance entre la Côte d’Ivoire, le Ghana, le Sénégal, la Suisse et l’Afrique du Sud.
Au collège, le garçon introverti est en proie à une phobie scolaire et trouve refuge dans la musique et le dessin. Influencé par l’univers d’Akira Toriyama et nourri par les mythes cryptozoologiques d’Afrique, il conçoit ses premières planches qui constituent un almanach de créatures fantasmagoriques. Cette œuvre marque le début de la recherche artistique de Mohamed Diop. Il se passionne pour la technologie, en particulier le transhumanisme et pour les esthétiques ancestrales telles que les scarifications Yorubas, l’art Ndebele ou encore le symbolisme Sereer.
Après des études de graphisme à Boston où il découvre l’Art Nouveau, l’univers de One Piece et les films de Satoshi Kon, Mohamed Diop revient s’installer à Dakar en 2018. Il y poursuit sa carrière de graphiste tout en développant son art du dessin, attirant progressivement l’attention de mentors et de pairs. Pour sa première participation à la Biennale de Dakar, il présente une série d’œuvres tirées de son premier roman graphique, Opéra Edeyem, un conte initiatique futuriste explorant le thème du voyage intergalactique et de l’hybridité.
Mohamed Diop is a young Senegalese visual artist who was born in 1996 in the Ivory Coast and lives in Dakar. He spent his childhood between Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Switzerland and South Africa.
In secondary school, the introverted boy was struck by a phobia of school and found refuge in music and drawing. Influenced by the world of Akira Toriyama and nourished by the cryptozoological myths of Africa, he created his first panels, which depicted an almanack of phantasmagorical creatures. This work marked the beginning of Mohamed Diop’s artistic research. He is passionate about technology, especially transhumanism, and ancestral aesthetics, such as Yoruba scarification, Ndebele art and Sereer symbolism.
After studying graphic design in Boston, where he discovered Art Nouveau, the world of One Piece and the films of Satoshi Kon, Mohamed Diop returned and settled in Dakar in 2018. He continued his career as a graphic designer while developing his drawing skills and gradually attracting the attention of mentors and colleagues. For his first participation in the Dakar Biennale, he presents a series of works from his first graphic novel Opéra Edeyem, a futuristic initiation story that explores the theme of intergalactic travel and hybridity.
