Sidney Régis, né en 1979 en Martinique, est un artiste et plongeur en apnée basé à Paris. En parallèle à sa carrière artistique, il exerce également en tant que naturaliste au CNRS, participant à un programme international de préservation des tortues marines. Son travail artistique est profondément influencé par son lien étroit avec la nature, qu’il observe avec une fascination particulière pour l’air et l’eau, deux éléments qui incarnent pour lui un monde complexe, interconnecté et en constante mutation.
Sidney Régis nourrit une passion profonde pour la mer. Il est détenteur de deux records de France de plongée en apnée. Qualifié pour les championnats du monde, il fait cependant le choix de décliner la compétition, préférant s’envoler pour les Galápagos où il pose comme danseur sous-marin pour le photographe et cinéaste canadien Grégory Colbert. Cette expérience marque un tournant décisif dans sa vie : à l’issue de cette collaboration, le photographe offre à Sidney Régis son premier appareil photo, lui ouvrant ainsi les portes d’une carrière artistique. Il commence par capturer la lumière, des objets ordinaires et des détritus sous l’eau, avant d’appliquer à ses tirages sur papier japonais un traitement unique.
Les œuvres de Sidney Régis rencontrent rapidement un vif succès et entrent dans de prestigieuses collections privées en France et à l’étranger. Parallèlement à ses expositions individuelles, Sidney Régis participe à de nombreuses expositions collectives, notamment en 2023 pour les Nations Unies à New York, en 2021 à une performance artistique à la Maison des Océans à Paris, et en 2019 à une exposition collective pour les Nations Unies à Genève, en Suisse. En 2018, il participe déjà à la Biennale d’art contemporain de Dakar.
Sidney Régis, born in 1979 in Martinique, is an artist and free diver based in Paris. In parallel with his artistic career, he also works as a naturalist at the CNRS, participating in an international program for the preservation of sea turtles. His artistic work is deeply influenced by his close connection with nature, which he observes with a particular fascination for air and water, two elements which embody for him a complex, interconnected and constantly changing world.
Sidney Régis has a deep passion for the sea. He holds two French freediving records. Qualified for the world championships, he however chose to decline the competition, preferring to fly to the Galapagos where he posed as an underwater dancer for the Canadian photographer and filmmaker Grégory Colbert. This experience marked a decisive turning point in his life: at the end of this collaboration, the photographer gave Sidney Régis his first camera, thus opening the doors to an artistic career. He begins by capturing light, ordinary objects and detritus underwater, before applying a unique treatment to his prints on Japanese paper.
Sidney Regis’ works quickly met with great success and entered prestigious private collections in France and abroad. Alongside his individual exhibitions, Sidney Régis participates in numerous group exhibitions, notably in 2023 for the United Nations in New York, in 2021 in an artistic performance at the Maison des Océans in Paris, and in 2019 in a group exhibition for the Nations. United in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2018, he already participated in the Dakar Contemporary Art Biennale.
