Sonia Barrett, artiste pluridisciplinaire, crée des œuvres mêlant plantes, animaux, éléments naturels et individus pour remettre en question leur objectification et leur commercialisation, tout en cherchant à modifier les perceptions des phénomènes naturels considérés comme acquis. D’origine jamaïcaine et allemande, elle a étudié la littérature à l’Université de St Andrews, en Écosse, avant d’obtenir son MFA (Master de Beaux-Arts) au Transart Institute de Berlin et New York.
Son travail explore les limites entre déterminisme et libre-arbitre, en mettant l’accent sur les questions de race et de genre. Ses créations sculpturales servent de support à son exploration des fissures et des failles, dans le but d’exprimer le deuil et d’élaborer des stratégies pour une coexistence multiple.
Sonia est une lauréate de la bourse MacDowell et a été récompensée par le prix Premio Ora, la vitrine NY Art-Slant pour la sculpture et le Neo Art Prize. Ses œuvres ont été exposées dans des institutions renommées telles que la National Gallery of Jamaica, la Tate Britain, le Museum of Derby ou le Kunsthaus Nürnberg.
Sonia Barrett, a multidisciplinary artist, creates works in which she combines plants, animals, natural elements and individuals to question their objectification and commercialization while changing the perception of natural phenomena that are taken for granted.
