Kelechi Agwuncha (born 1997) and KESSWA (Kesiena Wanogho, born 1992) develop a collaborative practice at the intersection of sound, video, performance, fibre, music and interactive technologies. Their performance 1139 LETY’S emerged in Detroit during a residency at the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation, in a building that once housed the hair salon Lety’s Cuts-N-Style. The artists transform the haircut into a ritual of mutual care: contact microphones attached to clippers convert the vibrations into sound material, reworked with drum machines and synthesisers. Bringing together a reading, a cosmogram and Nigerian objects, the work connects Black hairstyling, survival, attention, repetition and transmission.
