Lungiswa Gqunta (born in 1990 in Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth) is a South African artist working in performance, printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Her practice deconstructs spatial forms of exclusion and oppression by interrogating access to and ownership of land, as well as the social imbalances inherited from colonialism and patriarchy. She uses everyday objects (bottles, fabrics, wire, domestic structures, and materials associated with the urban landscape) whose potential for defence, protest, and confrontation she reveals. A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, where she earned an MFA in 2017, she is also a founding member of the iQhiya collective, with which she participated in documenta 14.
