Sokari Douglas Camp est une artiste née à Buguma, au Nigeria, en 1958. Elle a étudié les beaux-arts au California College of Arts and Crafts à Oakland, en Californie, ainsi qu’à la Central School of Art and Design de Londres et au Royal College of Art. Elle se spécialise dans la sculpture en acier, en incorporant divers matériaux et en s’inspirant notamment du patrimoine kalabari, du mouvement, du théâtre ou encore de l’environnement.
Elle a réalisé plus de 40 expositions personnelles dans le monde entier, y compris au National Museum of African Art de la Smithsonian Institution à Washington, D.C., et au Museum of Mankind à Londres. Ses sculptures sont présentes dans des collections permanentes de musées renommés, tels que le British Museum de Londres. En 2005, elle a été honorée en tant que Commandeur de l’Ordre de l’Empire Britannique (CBE) pour ses contributions à l’art.
Sokari Douglas Camp is an artist born in Buguma, Nigeria in 1958. She studied fine art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, at the Central School of Art and Design in London and at the Royal College of Art. She specializes in steel sculpture using a variety of materials and drawing inspiration from Kalabari heritage, movement, theater and the environment.
She has had more than 40 solo exhibitions around the world, including at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Mankind in London. Her sculptures are in the permanent collections of renowned museums such as the British Museum in London. In 2005, she was honored as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to art.
