Né en 1959 à Dabou (Côte d’Ivoire). Vit et travaille à Abidjan. Nguessan Essoh, diplômé de l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts d’Abidjan, a fait sa formation artistique en retrait du mouvement Vohou-Vohou. Il a subi la forte influence de Gérard Santoni, maître ivoirien de l’art mural. S’inspirant de Santoni dont la particularité était de peindre les larges bandes bleu indigo et rouges du pagne baoulé, Essoh, attaché à sa culture africaine, procède par coulées successives de couleurs sur la toile et le tapa afin d’obtenir une texture en relief. Cette texture évoque le raphia tissé, conférant à celui qui le porte prestige et dignité. Après avoir pratiqué la peinture figurative, N’Guessan Essoh opère un virage vers l’abstraction avec une parfaite maîtrise des gammes chromatiques. L’originalité de son écriture vient de la tapisserie dont il a gardé le sens du velouté, l’ondoyance et la variation rythmique. Nguessan Essoh revendique sa proximité d’avec le Martiniquais Mathieu Gensin, l’un des fondateurs de l’Ecole Négro-Caraïbe établi en Côte d’Ivoire depuis 1959. Ses pièces sont présentes dans d’importantes collections publiques et privées, notamment dans les prestigieux salons d’honneur de la Présidence de la République de Côte d’Ivoire.
Born in 1959 in Dabou (Côte d’Ivoire). Lives and works in Abidjan.Nguessan Essoh, a graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Abidjan, received his artistic training away from the Vohou-Vohou movement. He is a student of Gerard Santoni, the master of mural art of the said school. Inspired by his master whose particularity was to paint the broad indigo blue and red bands of the Baoule fabric, Essoh, deeply attached to his African culture, proceeds by successive pours of colors on the canvas and tapa to obtain an embossed texture. This texture evokes the woven raffia, conferring prestige and dignity to the wearer. After having practiced figurative painting, N’Guessan Essoh makes a turn towards abstraction with a perfect mastery of chromatic scales. The originality of his writing comes from the tapestry of which he has kept the sense of velvet, the undulation and the rhythmic variation. Nguessan Essoh has his pieces in important public and private collections. One of his artworks is in one of the most prestigious VIP lounges of the Presidency of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire.
