Ousmane Kà / Ussumane Cà (né dans la région de Biombo en Guinée Bissau, vit à Dakar) débute son apprentissage tisserand auprès de son frère en 1981. Quatre ans plus tard, il tisse son premier pagne. C’est en tant qu’assistant qu’il découvre Dakar en 1984. Il travaille ensuite à son compte à partir de 1987 dans le quartier Usine Ben Tally (Castor) dans un atelier collectif avec d’autres compatriotes Pepels et Mandjaques. Il installe son atelier personnel le 1er décembre 2007 à 8h dans le quartier de Guédiawaye où une fidèle clientèle le trouve toujours aujourd’hui. Son atelier sur rue, qui peut compter jusqu’à quatre métiers, est à la fois boutique et école tisserande. Il transmet son savoir faire et forme ses assistants indispensables à la création de ses étoffes : ourdissage des fils de chaîne, maniement rythmé des lacs et de la palette, et savante programmation des motifs si spécifique de la technique mandjaque, avant qu’ils ne prennent à leur tour leur indépendance.
Ousmane Kà / Ussumane Cà (born in the Biombo region of Guinea Bissau, lives in Dakar) began learning to weave from his brother in 1981. Four years later, he wove his first piece of fabric, and it is as an apprentice that he discovered Dakar in 1984. He started working independently in 1987 in the Usine Ben Tally (Castor) neighborhood in a collective workshop with fellow Pepel and Manjak countrymen. At 8 o’clock in the morning, on the 1st of December 2007, he opened his own workshop in the Guediawaye neighborhood where his loyal customers can still find him. His sidewalk workshop, which can include up to four looms, is at once a boutique and school of weaving. He shares his craft and trains assistants who are essential to the creation of his fabric – for hatching the warp yarn, for the rhythmic handling of the threads and paddle, and for the skillful programming of patterns highly specific to the Manjak technique – before it is their turn to gain their independence.
