Born in 1967 in Côte d’Ivoire. Lives and works in Abidjan. Valerie Oka began her international career in furniture design, of which she is one of the leading figures. In 2000, she won the prestigious European Union Prize at the Dak’Art International African Design Fair. Her art has since evolved to include performances, installations, drawings, paintings, sculptures, digital creations, etc. Interested in the question of borders, identities to be reinvented and women, she calls for a new human relationship. Her artworks translate a sum of restrained anger, of inner cries held on a leash. Her objective: to work towards the deconstruction of prejudices of all kinds, meaning the artificial limits conveyed by society. Taking a lucid look at Africa, she calls for its renaissance and its revival in the militant vision of the heroes of independence. It is not surprising that after having drawn the portrait of the latter, she has dedicated an international touring exhibition to them. Valerie Oka has taken part in many exhibitions. In 2018, she presented her work at Unesco (Paris). In 2019, she was at the Venice Biennale of Arts, in the pavilion of  Côte d’Ivoire..
