Hervé Youmbi (né à Bangui, République centrafricaine, vit au Cameroun) a découvert l’art dans son enfance, a commencé à suivre des cours à l’adolescence, puis a étudié de 1993 à 1996 à la seule école d’art du Cameroun à l’époque, IFA (Institut de Formation Artistique). Il apprend la théorie de l’art et s’intéresse à l’art de l’installation, qu’il poursuit, à travers la pratique et la recherche, en France à l’ESAD (École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg). Il est membre fondateur du Cercle Kapsiki, un collectif de cinq artistes visuels camerounais fondé en 1998. La K Factory, la maison du collectif, basée à New Bell, l’un des quartiers les plus pauvres mais aussi l’un des plus dynamiques de Douala, est un espace flexible, expérimental et ouvert à un large éventail de collaborations. A travers un travail ces dernières années consacré au masque, Hervé Youmbi, connu comme portraitiste, invite à sortir du portrait de l’individu pour nous conduire vers le portrait d’une société ancestrale, au sein de laquelle, les Masques ont une fonction essentielle de préservation et d’invention de l’identité collective. Il enseigne les arts plastiques dans plusieurs villes du Cameroun, aux Instituts des Beaux-arts de Nkongsamba et de Foumban, dans les écoles supérieures d’art des universités de Douala et de Dschang. Ses travaux ont été montrés dans de nombreuses expositions locales et internationales comme à la 5ème édition de « Munster skulptur projekt » (2017, Allemagne), aux biennales « Into nature » (2018, Hollande), « Dak’art » (2012, Sénégal). He teaches visual art in several Cameroonian cities, at the Instituts des Beaux-arts of Nkongsamba and Foumban, and in the art schools of Douala and Dschang universities.
